And why are the knowledgeable men of the swamp While helping the local police search for a missing teen who disappeared after a night of drunken boat antics ending in a boat vs. And why are the knowledgeable men of the swamp being killed? Another wonderful entry in a great series. Alam has given us more on poor Harry, terrified of diving into caves or in the darker parts of the surrounding water.
Vernon and Luanne's relationship hits a rough spot. Such a well written series. Each chapter layers more into this universe, each books adds even more. If you like a mixture of mystery, history, environment because the swamps are as big a character as the people who live in them , and a dollop of romance, try this series out.
It is from a small press, but has become available through Amazon for the Kindle. This is definitely a series that I would recommend reading in order. Apr 25, Ed rated it really liked it Shelves: action , crime , law-enforcement. Luanne is a linguistics professor who is also a swamp-dwelling, adjunct diver for the Sheriff's Department. The series has escaped the cave diving corner threatened by the first two entries but has retained the diving that provides a unique niche for this series. Cajun friend Pasquin and his knowledge of the swamp dwelling eccentrics plays a central role in this entry.

As always, the characters and writing are top notch. Read my full review at Carstairs Considers. Aug 04, Jennifer Ritz rated it it was amazing. I love this series. The main character is a linguistics professor who dives for the police department.
In every book she finds bodies or bones and then assists unofficially in the investigations with her swamp dwelling neighbor and her policeman boyfriend. Every book has been really good, they are pretty quick reads and the mysteries have some good twists and turns. Exploring a second cave, she finds a second body. Is there a connection? And if so, what is it? And who is the unidentified first woman and where is her body? This is a wonderful debut book. The plot develops nicely, and the characters are interesting as well.

The real star here is the setting. Alam is able to bring the swamp to life using all five senses in a way that places you right there without overshadowing the characters or story.

I was completely drawn into this world, enjoying every minute of it. I highly recommend this entertaining mystery and am looking forward to the second book in this series. When the two midwives leave with the baby, she gets involved trying to track down the trio. Where did they go?
And is the baby still alive? When a realtor dies in a mysterious accident, Luanne realizes there is much more at stake. Can she stay alive long enough to find the answers? Using all five senses effectively, Ms. Alam manages to place the reader in Florida and Georgia right along with the characters. I highly recommend both books in this series. They are a real treat for the mystery lover. River Whispers Maebelle Pope, a long-time city dweller, returns to the north Florida country, where she was raised, to keep a promise to her beloved grandmother by scattering her ashes along the river she loved, and along which Maebelle was raised.
River Whispers chronicles her solitary boat journey through the wilderness, during which she finds companionship, falls into mortal danger, and recalls a long-forgotten violent death. The coroner makes the connection with several other murders in various locations, including a skeleton that Luanne found while working another case two years earlier. Then a traveling carnival worker in the area for the fair is found murdered in the same manner. What was his connection with the women killed?
Why did the killer change his or her pattern? Will Luanne figure out the answer before the fair leaves town? The characters have grown and continue to develop in this story. And I loved watching Tony fight his pride whenever Luanne provided a good direction to go. Enders A.
